He found a desk at the end of the hallway. Knowing it was wrong to work the hallway on his Prep, it would have meant double duty and that he wasn't being paid for it. He took a new lesson plan from the teacher supply room, filled up the blocks from Monday through Friday. Then he pulled out his grade book and few Progress Reports running his finger down the grade column. His finger slipped when the janitor's bucket rattled. Looking over to him, the janitor flashed a smile and a nod.
Brice grinned back but dropped it when he saw Wilma the lunch lady hurrying down the hallway, marching the opposite way of the lunchroom.
"Wilma, you're okay," Brice said, in upright position. His body tense around his neck.
"No, my daughter got in a fight in class." Wilma paused avoiding eye contact. "She's pregnant and I'm -" Wilma started back down the hallway.
Brice caught up with Wilma. They turned the corner, approaching a darken hallway. Wilma followed the first light beam that shone under the roll of classroom doors. She patted her hand against the glossy brick wall, advancing her way into a hollow out hole to reach the door. Knocking twice on the poster attached to the door that had cursive letters spelling out Mr. Madison World History with Lego-shaped earths. Wonder if he should be in elementary?
Mr. Madison came out of his classroom. The kids were silent with their eyes concentrating on their books. Wilma touched Mr. Madison's arm. "Has Ayesha been fighting again?"
