“Is Shawn there?” Brice asked.
“Hold on,” the boy said. “I’ll get him.”
Brice jerked from the noise of the receiver being dropped.
"Don't tangled up the phone squirt," Shawn yelled.
"What's wrong," Brice asked.
"The phone cord is twisted tight," Shawn said.
“Are you alright?” Brice asked.
“Man, shooting and dying doesn’t bother me anymore.”
“I’m making a move on Arcadio tomorrow night,” Brice said, placing the phone between his ear and shoulder. Nothing else could bother Shawn except death. He lied in the school hallway hollering, drenched in blood. “You’re coming with me, right?”
“With what army?” Shawn asked.
“If you do what I say and follow directions Shawn, Bautista will be in jail before summer.” Brice grabbed his dumbbell with his free hand. Then he did some arm curls.
“I’m in on this,” Shawn said.
“We’ll confront him at his home.” Brice paused. “When he’s alone.”
“Riding together after work?” Shawn asked.
“See you then.”
Brice skipped breakfast. He hauled the box of uniforms to his trunk then he returned to the living room, making sure the lights were on. Crisp cold air caused him to go back upstairs to change from his slacks to his denim jeans. It was causal Friday anyway. He grabbed his Windbreaker with the school colors, yellow and green. Frost covered his car’s windows and grass.
After Brice heated his car up and defogged his windows, he drove over to Hefty’s house and blew his horn. Two of Hefty’s sons were playing catch with a football. They looked up.
“Tell your dad to come here,” Brice said.
The youngest one turned towards the door. Hefty appeared with hands hidden under a tee shirt and brown Dickies.
“I’ve left the lights on,” Brice said, drumming his fingers on the passenger’s seat head rest. "I’m expecting a high ass electrical bill."
Hefty nodded, unveiling his gun from under his clothing. His other son dropped the football revealing a handgun. Brice pulled away from the curb, looking back. Things weren’t smoothed over yet. Hefty should have said okay man. He opted to hold a grudge over last night.
In Brice's hood, he would have to use his guns and be read to kill. Hefty wasn't letting it go he offended him by bringing on weak and fearful feelings. If they argue, it would be over who was the stronger.
