She had beaten Shante with her Kmart's gym shoes covered with razor blades. Her blood ruined her fresh outfit and her lips were sliced and shut. Ebony had the freshest outfit for the first time, a Kmart original. No Shante, to say it wasn't.
Chef finished stacking the diner plates. His dishwasher called off last night, leaving the dishes and opening duties for him. He ran Pat Coney straight out of high school when he won the trust of Pat the Grandmother from the South. She lived off the profits and came by to mowed the grass. Pat and Chef were the two she saved during the robbery.
"Want coffee or tea," Chef asked filling glass pots.
"Ice Tea," Ebony said.
"You know that needs ice."
"I'm being difficult." Ebony headed to the back kitchen. "He left the ice bin empty." Chef nodded.
After using eight buckets of ice, Ebony had overflown the ice bin. Chef had the tea dispenser set up then he started adding tea bags to the stockpot boiling water. Lt.Vinsetta came in looking the restaurant over. "Steak and hash browns with coffee," he said taking a seat at Ebony and his favorite table for their weekly meetings.
"What's going on with you?" Lt. Vinsetta asked when she sat down with her beverage. He stared at her face. "Your eyes turned hollowed. You were dedicated and driven toward fighting for your community. "
"I've held so many dead children bodies in my arms,"
"We can't have are emotion side tracks us. You're a good cop and can become the best."
Ebony sunk her head. "What good comes of being a good cop? Better pay. Become captain or chief." She raised her head. "I don't want that I just want the kids to be safe and the guns and gangs gone." She knew when the words came out that she couldn't be a cop. She no longer believed being a cop made a difference. She would disposal of the criminals.
"I need you to keep working for me." Lt. Vinsetta raised his arms up as Chef served his food. "Who will patrol the school and find the shooter who gun down Mario." The street lights faded out as the sunshine covered the floor. "I used to trust you but something wrong."
